After talking to grandpa, I knew I had a lot to learn about HVAC.
I thought it was just heating, ventilation and air conditioning, but it was so much more than that.
Air conditioning was one of the most important jobs for people to have when in a submarine or a ship. Since you couldn’t get fresh air into the cabins or in the bowels of the ship you had to have someone keeping the air purification system running. There had to be a way to circulate the air throughout the entire ship or submarine and keep the air fresh as it circulated. The HVAC technician was given special classes so they could make sure this was always happening. They had to know how to isolate certain rooms if there was a problem and how to keep the temperatures evenly regulated. When in a submarine or ship, there were always going to be area that were colder because they were further under water, and you needed to be aware fo this. He said it wasn’t just learning how to repair an HVAC system, but you had to know how it worked and why it worked the way it did. I was constantly changing my mind about what job I wanted to do as an HVAC technician. I was telling my friends about grandpa and Jake told me he sounded cool, but what did that have to do with my being an HVAC technician. I told him I had recently signed up to go into the Navy. I wanted to be a Naval HVAC technician.
