I was so blessed to have a great professor in the industry.
Long before I got my certification I was what my good friend and I call an HVAC “helper” which is basically the assistant to an HVAC tech.
My Uncle Ed had been in the industry for four decades, as well as although she was retired Ed was still a wellspring of overpriced info, and uncle Ed told me that my task as an HVAC helper was to listen as well as learn. I was getting paid for the task of course, but it was also free skills training for the rest of my job. Many HVAC techs begin as helpers in the AC industry, this is the way it has always been because of the complexity of the work. Uncle Ed called some of her outdated friends in the local HVAC community as well as landed me a starting position as an AC helper to a certified tech. I did my best to follow the advice of my uncle Ed, as well as paid close attention to everything the certified HVAC tech did as well as said. I even brought a little notebook to jot things down. At the end of the work week I would go hang out with Uncle Ed, who would roll a few joints as well as discuss heating as well as cooling details with me. Even while completely high on cannabis, Uncle Ed knew more about the industry than my certified HVAC tech did. Between the 2 of them I learned such an incredible amount about heating as well as cooling service over the course of 6 months. Pretty soon I suppose I’ll be ready to go for an HVAC certification myself.
